For thousands of years it has been believed that laughter is the best drug. Unfortunately, it seems that the laughter in the new Netflix comedy “Kinda pregnant” has been recalled. What is worse, the side effects include irritation, drowsiness and a very boring headache.
“Kinda pregnant” stars Amy Schumer, who together wrote script as Lainy Newton. She is a middle -aged teacher who always dreamed of settleing down and being a mother. She also sleeps on a futon with a kind of magical spring system that sends her flies over her apartment, which happens often enough (alleged – we only see it once) that she has to keep a pile of pillows in the landing zone.
Believe it or not, this futon will be important later, but not for the right reasons.
Lainy believes that her boyfriend Dave (Damon Wayans Jr.) is about to suggest, but it is the beginning of a romantic comedy, so it is all a misunderstanding and now she is incredibly lonely and cool in despair. We can say that she has been disillusioned because she used to tell her students that “Romeo & Juliet” was a beautiful love story, and now she tells them that it is a tragedy of horny young lovers making bad mistakes (she doesn’t seem to be so very good English teacher).
Lainy is miserable, but her best friend Kate (Jillian Bell) is married and pregnant. Lainy should be happy for her but she can’t collect these feelings. Instead obsessed Lainy and parties, until she finally she trying on a fake pregnancy stomach And realize that everyone treats her better. So she continues to wear it, which makes a new friendship with the actually pregnant Megan (Brianne Howey)-and Lainy’s flowering romance with Megan’s loving yet-roasted brother, Josh (Will Forte)-Very complicated because you know, you know, you know, Everything is based on lies.
“Kinda pregnant” is not the first comedy, romantic or otherwise, which relies on contradictory fraud for humor or excitement. Unfortunately, it is not one of the better either. While looking at this strangely lifeless and depressing trifle, which barely knocks out a laugh every 20 minutes, one cannot help but wonder why “Kinda pregnant” does not work. It really is not the role. They have been fun before and they will probably be fun again. Heck, Schumer and Forte have real, heartwarming chemistry together. A movie about their two characters who fell in love, without any high or low concept at all, could have been disarming and satisfactory on their own.
No, the problem with “quite pregnant” is that Lainy’s fraud requires a motivation, even in a motivated story, and motivation can do or break a comedy. The most boring screwball films can get away with a strange plot point because their characters are in a world where strange things often happen. Katharine Hepburn’s character in “Bringing Up Baby” assumes a leopard because she is the kind of person who would adopt a leopard. Screw ball comedies can also justify a fraud through unlikely circumstances. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis dress like women in “Some as the hot” because they witnessed a murder and had to come up with disguises (Lemmon’s character also seems to realize – at least as much as any character in a production code comedy – that they are trans trans , which makes the story extra sweet and inspiring).
Lainy’s fraud is not motivated by snody or plot, it is justified by misery. “Kinda pregnant” deserves credit to try to find a certain humanity in a formal rom-com, but it goes so far into Lainy’s tragic main space that her fraud and subsequent Shenanigans are not fun or fun. They shout for help. She is not Katharine Hepburn in “Bringing Up Baby” or Jack Lemmon (or Tony Curtis) in “Some like it’s hot.” She is Edward Norton in “Fight Club” – and it’s just not the same vibe.
Of course, if a movie does not work like a crazy comedy, we must also consider if it may be meant to be a crazy comedy at all. Maybe we should see this story through a completely different lens. Clea Duvall’s “happiest season” was just superficial a rom-com, for example: its old-fashioned and contradictory romantic comedy tropes thinly masked an unpleasant sad story about how living a lie-in that case, pretend that your girlfriend is just a friend to A friend to be a friend because you are uncomfortable to come out to your family – is not fun. The “happiest season” is not a failed Rome-com, it is a subversive and cut-off dark comedy that pulls the interior of a Rom-Com and reveals its uncomfortable finds.
Hi, do you remember futon that I mentioned earlier? I told you it would be important later, but I meant it was important for this review, not that “quite pregnant” plot. Director Tyler Spindel (“The Out-Laws”) dumps that moment, the dopiest type of slapstick in the first minute of the film, setting the scene for Yuck-Yucks. We are reminded, with a few scenes, that we should enjoy superficial comic hijinks such as talkfalls and embarrassing sex, which undermines the severe dramatic undertones of Julie Paiva and Schumer’s script – which in turn makes these hibinks much less fun.
There are several scenes of Amy Schumer in Slapstick -situations It would seriously jeopardize the life of her (alleged) children. It can work if the tone is absurd, but “quite pregnant” is only serious enough because the terrified reactions from Schumer’s spectators record and Schumer’s personal embarrassment does not. Then there is another scene where a toddler intentionally sticks a (supposedly) pregnant woman in the stomach with a knife, and the audience is somehow thought to think that it is funny instead of deeply scary on several levels. That child is not a laugh ride. That child is a potential serial killer.
There is a decent Rome-com hidden under “Kinda pregnant” tonal disasters and a decent tragedy hidden behind all the desperate Buffoonery. But the best qualities of the film are hidden far, far too good. Besides, that is, for Will Forte’s Lovely Sad Sack boyfriend, who – as a character and as an actor – deserves a better romance than this one.
