What is the best day to buy air tickets?
The answer is not as cut and dry as you may think. According to research from ExpediaThe travel side says that Sunday is the cheapest weekday to book flights. “Travelers who book on a Sunday can save about 8 percent on average compared to those booked on a Friday,” Expedia found.
But some travel experts do not agree. “Tuesday afternoons is the cute place for booking of flights,” says RESKSPERT YULIA SAF. “Airlines usually release their prices on the weekend on Monday nights, which leads to price adjustments to the competitors on Tuesday afternoon, which results in discounted prices.” Resecspert Stephanie Webb agrees: “Tuesdays tend to be less busy for airlines and travel booking sites, which means that travelers can find better offers.” If you are unsure if your schedule allows, avoid booking your flight on Fridays or Saturdays as these tend to be more popular travel days with higher demand.
When is the best time to book a flight?
If you have a specific date in mind, according to the Expedia report, domestic flights should be purchased “at least one month before” to save an average of 24 percent of the costs, and international flights should be booked “about 60 days out.” However, many experts believe that an international flight should be booked earlier than two months before.
Booking a morning or late evening flight can also be the move. “Booking of flights during top hours, such as early in the morning or late at night, can sometimes result in lower prices due to reduced demand,” web says. But think about this way: the earlier you book your flight, the more time you have to monitor the price overtime and adjust your flight as needed.
If you are flexible on your travel dates, experts recommend booking during the months of January or February, as the months “tend to offer good offers when the airlines roll out sales to stimulate demand after the travel after the holiday,” web says.
Tips to think about when booking flights
The more flexible you are, the better. This includes being flexible when you leave, the date you leave, the airline you use and more. In other words, if your schedule allows you to be flexible, don’t worry if your go-to airline is expensive for the dates you want to travel. Instead, take a look at other flight options and/or try to leave and return a day or two earlier than you originally wanted, says travel specialist Stephan Drescher. Also, don’t forget to connect flights. Yes, they can take a little longer, but the savings may be worth it, says Ben.
Invest in a travel credit card. Most major airlines offer credit cards that are specific to their airlines, making it easier for you to earn miles and points. Although booking a flight with an airline seems expensive for a holiday, it can earn you points that can help you make your next holiday cheaper.
Avoid booking trips during the holidays. Since most people want to travel during the time they have leave from work or school, there is a higher demand for flights around holidays. For this reason, you are planning a time for you to vacation outside these periods of the year. Less demand for flights will mean cheaper options for you.
