How do you get the idea for an absurdist drama about cabbage smuggling? For Evan Twohy, the author-director of “Bubble & Squeak,” It started with a writing exercise.
“It was a kind of writer’s exercise, I think, to find a character that does something incomprehensible and then to punish them with the worst punishment possible,” Twohy said at Thewrap’s Sundance Studio presented by World of Hyatt. “And then from there it has been this long journey during the last and a half decades of trying to make that character and her husband make sense, and in a kind of way find them in an emotional place, given that it starts from This place of pure absurdity. “
With its name from a British dish made of roasting residues such as cabbage, “Bubble & squeak”, Himesh Patel and Sarah Goldberg play as a couple who smuggles cabbage to a fictional country where they are prohibited. The film also plays Dave Franco, who said that Twohy’s direction played directly into the Deadpan feeling of humor he has a soft place for.
“I feel that there is a version of this movie that in the wrong hands can be much over the top and very stupid. But what I loved in my first conversation with Evan was, “No matter how crazy things my character says is to say, play it as real as possible,” he said. “I want you to spray things about … cocaine and linseed oils and whatever, but do this as grounded as you might.”
Goldberg said that what she liked most about the film was to explore the relationship between the couple as well as what happens when it happens to love someone else is enough for a long -term relationship.
“There is something in this relationship where there really is so much love there, but in the end they may not be right for each other in what they want out of life, and they are at the beginning of their marriage, and they have these insights About how different they are, she said.
