Universal presented one of the largest marketing campaigns this page of “Barbie” last year for “Wicked”, and it was rewarded with the largest cash office ever seen for a Broadway musical adaptation.
Now Elphaba and Glinda are themselves, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, back at Cinemacon with “Wicked: for Good”, director Jon M. Chu adaptation of the second act of the legendary musical behind Wicked Witch of the West.
As everyone who has seen the musical knows, the second act is much darker than the first, filled with tragedy. The Cinemacon Sneak view showed this, when we return to an oz lost in the dark, with Elphaba who plans to reveal the manipulative magician (Jeff Goldblum) while Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) turns Glinda into a propaganda figure towards his former friend.
In the first trailer, which was exclusively shown at Cinemacon, we see Glinda in a white dress looking for Elphaba when she sees one of the windows in her penthouse Suite Crack. Elphaba is really there, out of hiding briefly when she plots her plan against the guide and leaves a message in the cloud that reads, “our magician lies” as part of her hard plans.
At the same time, Fiyero has been promoted to Captain for Emerald City Guard, a job he takes in the hope of seeing Elphaba again. But his love takes a rear seat when he is forced with coercion to Glinda, much to her joy and his shame.
And while the tensions escalate, a certain young girl from Kansas lands in Oz and starts her famous journey, all while Madame Morrible looks from the shadows.
Originally called “Wicked: Part Two”, the movie is now taking its name from “For Good”, the song that captures the film’s emotional climate when Elphaba and Glinda reflect on how they have changed each other. The film is expected to be one of the highest gross of the year, matching or maybe exceed the first film’s $ 747 million in global revenue.
“Wicked: For Good” meets theaters November 21.
