Belgian Film Festival Film Fest Gent and World Soundtrack Academy will honor the memory of David Lynch By having young composers get an excerpt from the late author “The Elephant Man” as part of their annual film music composition competition.
“The Elephant Man,” Lynch’s 1980 cult film, says the true story of the English artist Joseph Merrick, who, because of his serious physical deformities, became a national celebrity in Victorian England. It played a strongly composed John Hurt as the sensitive Merrick, Anthony Hopkins as the London Hospital surgeon who became his guardian and Brook’s wife Anne Bancroft as a sympathetic West End star. The function received eight Oscar nominations, including Lynch’s first for best director.

The film’s original points were composed by John Morris, the American film and television composer who worked at several Broadway musicals in the 1950s and is best known for his work with Mel Brooks, who also produced “The Elephant Man.”
A professional jury, chairman of the WSA president of the Board Dirk Brossé, will choose the composition competition’s three finalists from a pool of young composers for 36 years. The finalists will be announced in June.
The winner will be presented with the World Soundtrack Award for best original composer by a young composer on October 15 during the World Soundtrack Awards ceremony. The prestigious awards recognize contributions from global film and television composers. All three selected original results will be performed by Brussels Philharmonic and routed by Brossé during the ceremony.
