As someone who has tried different fitness classes, I know how scary it can be to try a workout for the first time. Continue reading for a division of everything you can expect for your first F45 training class and my honest F45 review.
How is F45 training?
F45 training is centered on 45-minute functional training sessions, which focus on mimicking movements you use every day, such as pulling, pressing and lifting. Every day, workouts will fall into one of three categories: cardio, resistance training or a hybrid of the two. The schedule deliberately switches between cardio and resistance training to enable members to take lessons every day (if desired) without being boring. I prefer F45 training over similar group condition training that combine HIIT and strength training because of this variation. In my experience, instructors can often make or break a fitness class. But since the F45 training training is formulated in advance and is displayed on the screen so that class members can easily follow along, you do not need to book your classes based on the instructor. Of course, there are F45 coaches there to help with form, prevent injury and lead courses, but they do not create the training themselves.
I have also found F45 training to have a more welcoming environment compared to other group conditioning courses. The energy does not feel super-intensive or bro-y, and the members are usually friendly. Since everyone is at different stations with a focus on different features I have never felt self -conscious Or worried that others pay attention to me, which can often be a problem when you are new to a fitness class.
What you can expect at your first F45 training class
Prepare for the class by knowing what type of class you go into, which you can see when you sign up. I recommend that you arrive at 10 to 15 minutes early to your first F45 training class. When you first enter, expect a coach to ask about injuries or exercises you avoid. At the beginning of the class you will be directed to the blue peat, where the members stand while the coaches go through the format and each station, and demonstrate each of the movements. While the fast demonstrations may feel overwhelming, know that you do not have to memorize any features: there are several screens throughout the room showing timer and videos of athletes showing every movement and station under the class as well.
The group will then break up for a heating, which is also instructed on the screen. This includes basic movements such as arm circles, thumbs and spinal twists. During this time, a coach will assign you a number to enter the station you start at. When you come to your station you usually have one or two partners to move through the class with you. From there, the screens and coaches will always instruct you about what to do next, whether it is movement or stay at a station or take a hydration break. The classes always end with a quick distance and cooling.
F45 training tips for beginners
- Pay attention to the demonstrations. Arrive in time for the class and make sure you look and listen to the coaches during the class introduction and demo. While the screens in the class are there to remind you of your next move, it is always good to get an idea of the exercises before you dive.
- Ask your coaches for help. For those who are brand new with weight lifting, a special resistance training class can be scary to keep up with. If you do not know a specific exercise, wave over a coach to help with your shape and set equipment to prevent the risk of injury. Don’t be afraid to ask for a modification if needed.
- Listen to your body. F45 training often tests your endurance. Especially for cardiovascular dinners, I recommend that you stimulate yourself afterwards, take breaks and modify when possible so that you do not exercise all your energy on the first sets.
What to carry and bring to F45 training
For resistance training days, I recommend flat gym shoes for weightlifting to prevent damage.
