It has been 20 years since Judd Apatow’s “The 40-year-old Virgin” hit screens, and to celebrate, the director patted back on some tough reviews of comedy. Don’t worry, however, he thinks some of them are quite fun.
In a new video released on Wednesday morning, Apatow put down with Letterboxd, an app that allows movie fans to track, review and discuss their favorite movies. The app has been skyrocketed in recent years and earned fame for traumatizing actors and filmmakers by forcing them to choose their four favorite movies.
This time, the outlet presented Apatow with reviews of comedy with Steve Carell. One came from a user named Valerie, who gave the movie just one and a half stars and said that the only fun part was when a clip from “Everybody Loves Raymond” was used.
“It’s just evil,” Apatow replied. “So you watch the whole movie, you just liked a reference to” Everybody Loves Raymond “, and you just wanted to hurt me. And you did. Valerie, you did.”
At the same time, a user named Daryl gave the movie five stars and got Apatow to joke “I like Daryl better than Valerie.”
However, there were more hard reviews, with Jana who only gave “the 40-year-old virgin” a star and wrote “I have to save every woman in this.”
“Well, you’re not sure what that means, Jana!” Apatow patted back sarcastically. “Jana, you don’t understand it. You don’t understand it, Jana, and there is no way I can ever explain it to you, because you are just thick. Jana, you’re thick!”
However, it was a negative review that Apatow liked, and it came from someone with the username “Idilce.” They gave the movie just half a star and wrote “The first time see a manic pixie dream morm.”
“Do you know what? It’s pretty funny,” admitted Apatow. “I’ll give it to you. It’s pretty funny.”
