Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia have joined the role of “The rear room,” The upcoming sci-fi horror film from A24, Atomic Monster, North Road Company’s Chernin Entertainment and 21 Laps Entertainment.
The film also plays Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinve with a script written by Will Soodik.
Production begins this week in Canada, with Chernin Entertainment co -financing together with A24. Both act as fellow studios on the film.
The science-fiction horror film is based on 20-year-old Parson’s own Youtube series of the same name, which he created and directed as a horror project with foundage. The plot of the film adaptation is held under cover, but Parsons marks the youngest director in the A24 history.
The “rear room” traces its origin back to a 4chan Creepypasta 2019 and involves an alternative reality consisting of nothing but an infinite maze of abandoned office space, with sharp fluorescent lamps and beige-painted corridors that either lead to nowhere or hide disturbing creatures that wander the whole.
In January 2022 released Parsons A short film Based on Meme, presented as a VHS band from the 1990s that was filmed by someone who managed to find their way into the back rooms and are now forced to flee from the creatures inside. The video, which has over 190 million views, triggered a series on Parson’s Youtube Channel Kane pixels and built a rear story around a shady organization that opened a dimensional portal in the back rooms.
The film is produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine for 21 speed entertainment, along with Chris Ferguson for Oddfellows Pictures and Roberto Patino. James Wan and Michael Clear produce for Atomic Monster, with Judson Scott as executive producer and Alayna Glasthal monitor for the company. Chris White, who brought the project to Atomic Monster, will also EP.
