“Oh, hello” screenwriter Molly Gordon and Sophie Brooks believe that their new romantic comedy aims at modern dating culture without being a complete “removal” of men.
“This movie is about a mistake between men and women that we all have, and it is from a female perspective, from Soph and My Perspectives, but it is not a removal of guys,” Gordon told Thewrap’s Executive Editor Adam Chitwood under Thewrap’s Sundance Studio presented by Hyatt’s world. “We really wanted it to feel equally weighted.”
“Oh, hello,” who nods to the small but well -known California city, is centered on a newlywed couple who go on a weekend road that does not go as they planned. And ironically, “Oh, Hello”, as the creators said he created the idea to start new relationships, originally would take place in Ojai, but Gordon and Brooks moved it to New York to save money.
“Originally it was put in Ojai, California, and it was a kind of game that it was put there and also the idea when you go into a new relationship,” Brooks explained. “As if you introduce yourself and there are some nerves … Our characters say it a few times in the movie,” Oh, “this consciousness but also hopefulness. So originally played it with it and sat there, and then we moved It to Upstate New York for tax credit reasons. Shout out to New York, we love New York. And there is a real place that Molly discovered called Jay Falls in Upstate New York, and so we have a game on it, Iris, Molly’s character , think it’s Ojai Falls in the movie. ”
The heart of the film’s story came after Gordon and Brooks got their broken, as the two experienced divisions during the Covid shutdown.
“We were both very depressed and had both recently been dumped and we had tied over our shared heart damage, and Soph and went to me and went,” Hello, I have this idea, “and I tricked immediately and I was like,” Oh, My God, wait, I want to do it with you, “Gordon said.” So we spent this weekend together to develop it into what is “oh, hello.” Then Sophie went away and wrote it and then it took five years and now we are here. “
“Oh, Hello” had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2025 on January 26.
“I mainly hope that people just feel seen and relate to it and that they are entertained,” Brooks said about the project. “We try to comment on the dating culture, but also only have a fun movie and do not make anyone feel that they are being preached in any way. But I believe that if takeaway is honest in relationships and you shouldn’t have to convince someone to love you, it would be nice. I would like people to feel it. “
Gordon joined joking that “Oh, Hello” works as “wishes” for his character Claire, who has a turmoil romantic relationship with Jeremy Allen White’s character on “The Bear.”
“Working with Jeremy at ‘The Bear’ has been such a beautiful experience and I feel that this feels like wishes for Claire to come to, like, ‘let’s have a conversation, Carmy,'” said Gordona in Jest. “And so this movie is … I just want to say it’s part of ‘The Bear’ Extended Universe. Chris (Stores), the creator, definitely knows it. I just wanted him to be aware that it is part of the universe. ”
