It is hard to imagine MCU fans who expect any casting more in recent years than Fantastic Four. After long months of rumors and speculation, Marvel Studios announced its range on Valentine’s Day 2024, with Pedro Pascal as leading hero Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic. Criticism of the actor’s appearance has since flooded the internet, with many users on social media who call Pascal old for that matter.
The 50-year-old star in “The Last of Us” and “The Mandalorian” said he took these comments to the heart more than usual.
“I think the outside sometimes will find you no matter how much you try to protect you from it, and it only comes with the territory,” Pascal told Ap Entertainment at a London -based “Fantastic Four” fan event. “I think my nerves were bigger than they usually are, and so I think I was just a little more sensitive to the love that people have for stories like this, because I know they would not exist if it wasn’t for the love that people have for these characters.”

In Marvel Comics, Reed Richard’s power is given to stretch his body in elastic forms after he leads an untrue research trip to outer space, where he is then accidentally bombarded with cosmic rays. Along for the trip there is Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), all of whom get extraordinary forces in the same way.
While direct ages are never given to the characters in their origin comic, key details suggest reed and legs (longtime best friends) both in the mid-30s at the accident. Alternatively, Sue has been portrayed as a relatively contemporary by Reed and just about a decade younger than her husband and placed her in the 20th century when she gained her powers. Johnny was a teenager, about 16, when they went out into space.
When looking at these ages, Pascal is really not alone in being on the older side for the character. The actor, who recently turned 50, is united in the role of Moss-Bachrach (48), Kirby (38) and Quinn (31). This places all four actors who would have been at the time of their journey about a decade older than their comic books. Of course, an adaptation does not have to adhere to exact parameters for the almost 64-year origin story.
But performance is not about appearance alone. Pascal claimed that he takes the role seriously and intended to produce the character in a way he hopes that fans will find satisfactory.
“I think it is very important to me that expectations are met,” he said. “But I also know that the only way to do that is to give it all my focus and all my heart and my body and my soul, and so that was the best I could do.”
Despite Pascals Rocketpopularity in recent years, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, the actor presents a unique challenge. Although he has portrayed characters in popular Franchises such as “Star Wars”, “Game of Thrones”, “The Last of Us” and DC Comics Universe, Reed Richards will easily be the most popular character he has developed.
The actor seems to enjoy the challenge.
“It’s the best time in my life,” Pascal said at the fansing event. “I look around and it’s an incredible reflection of what I am experiencing right now. I have an amazing time.”
