“The Friend” is almost here.
Drama from directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel opens exclusively in New York on March 28 before it was released on April 4. And you can watch a brand new trailer for the Naomi Watts-led movie below.
“The Friend”, based on Sigrid Nunez’s book 2018 of the same name, plays Bill Murray as a man who leaves his beloved big Dane to his friend (Watts). Wouldn’t you know, she learns more from the dog than the dog could ever learn from her? Sarah Pidgeon, Constance Wu, Ann Dowd, Noma Dumezweni, Owen Teague and Carla Gugino also play.
The film premiered at last year’s Telluride Film Festival and was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Bleecker Street acquired the North American rights to the film, which tentatively planned an early 2025 edition. Now we know that the release is not really early in 2025 but we still take it.
When the film premiered it was reviewed warmly. Our own critic said that the movie “juggles the happy, the sad and bitter sweetness while he somehow failed to lose the ease that has kept it fluently.”
Watts recently paid tribute to David Lynch, who was responsible for an extreme bolt in his career thanks to “Mulholland Drive,” Write on Instagram: “Every moment, together with a presence I have rarely seen or known. Probably because, yes, he seemed to live in a changed world, one that I feel lucky to have been a small part of. And David invited everyone to see that world through his delicious story, which raised cinema and inspired generations of filmmakers all over the world. “Talk about a friend!
“The Friend” is in New York on March 28 and everywhere on April 4.
